Doomsday-1 Mission To Save Earth

The Challenge:

Form a team and design a plan to save the world from an imminent collision with the Doomsday-1 Asteroid and prepare a video presentation for the UN highlighting the merits of your plan.

The Problem:

We are in trouble! A lone astronomer spotted an “Earth killer” asteroid that has come to be called “Doomsday One”. D-1 will strike Earth in the southern hemisphere in one year!

It will strike near the city of Auckland. Scientists predict that this will be an extinction level event. Your teams has been asked to save the world. Good luck and Godspeed!


Hold a meeting that will help you form teams and launch them into creating a plan to save the world. Plan another meeting where you will share your group makeup, your research and your preliminary plan of attack. This will be your soft deadline when you will share your nearly ready presentations with the community.

What success looks like:

A successful plan will make a great case for it’s chance of success in the allotted time before impact and will be rooted in research and logic. Your math and science must make sense and you will need to consult with an outside expert who will help guide you in your designs and recommend your plan to the President. All members of your group are responsible for a working knowledge of the entire plan. (Please take pictures and shoot video of your team as they work to complete this mission.)

In this scenario, kids will become researchers and

problem solvers in order to design a plan to save the

            Earth from a hypothetical : ) asteroid strike.

This project step by step



In this challenge you will have to become expert at all things related to asteroids and call on outside experts and other sources of information to help you formulate your plan. Additional respect will be won by groups utilizing technology tools like Skype, Google Sketchup and other collaborative or design tools and pencils, markers and whiteboards still work. You will need evidence that your plan can work and you will be tasked with defending your plan before a panel of experts. Final presentations should be captured on video to be viewed by the President. These videos should be no longer than ten minutes in length.
